Tuesday, July 20, 2010 : Mumble Test server up, go play with it Ashpownderz
The Mumble voice test server is now set-up
First you will need to download the Mumble client for your OS which can be found here:
http://mumble.sourceforge.net/
(Only issues I found so far is related directly to older Macs using Tiger OS i.e. Mac OS 10.4, there is a link for experimental builds which may work in Tiger but might have bugs so use at your own risk. As far as Macs go if you are running on anything older then Leopard, Mac OS 10.5 you really should bite the bullet and at least upgrade to Leopard or later and maybe even your hardware as well, i.e. intel/mac.)

When you first install it you will be prompted with several dialog screens to set-up/configure Mumble for use. These are fairly self explainatory, however if you get stuck here is a guide which may assist and help you:

Server Login info
- Address: vx36.commandchannel.com
- Port: 31385
- Password: vsouls66
(With Mumble you apparently really don't need to use/have passwords cause it authenticates using certificates, which you will need to create and agree to, but I put a required password in there too.)

So feel free to D/L the client, install, login and play with it. Kinda looking to see what the delay/latency time is, it's supposed to be really fast. The application itself is also supposed to be lighter, less CPU intensive then Vent and TS so that should be a plus as well.

Also see if you can play with the "Overlay" feature in your warcraft window, interested if it does indeed work and if you can configure it to everyone's liking...

Please use your main toons ingame character name when connecting to server so we can verify the overlay features, thank you!

I included a Mumble Viewer on this website as well, thanks all

(P.S. if you see "Superuser," and try to converse with him... he is simply deaf and mute and can't respond to you)

Monday, July 19, 2010 : We are considering a new voice/chat client Ashpownderz
Greetings Vanquished Soulsies! VS is considering a new voice chat client for use in raids and in game communication. We currently use Ventrilo, (Vent) and it has worked pretty good for the past year with minor annoyances on occasion. However there is a new contender in the mmo/gaming voice chat world which has been receiving some notable buzz recently. I am speaking of "Mumble." Mumble is very similar to Ventrilo, Teamspeak for voice chatting.

Why are we considering this? A few reasons actually, let me 'splain, No, there is too much. Let me sum up:

- Big #1 is latency and buffering, in the laborious and extensive research I have done, all of 6 minutes, I see that Mumble's latency in layman's terms is around milliseconds to 2 sec. delays, with 0.5 being average. Ventrilo on the other hand has anywhere from 2 to 5 sec. delays on average and up to 10+ seconds in extreme cases. These are not "set-in-stone statistics" as numerous factors to consider such as, sever location/latency, client-side cpu usage, client-side network latency, etc.

- Cost, we can get a 50-seat Mumble server for around $9 per/month compared to a 40-seat Vent server for around $15 per/month.

- Sound quality, users who have used all three, Vent, TS and Mumble, say Mumble has superior voice quality compared to others, and... also has a sound normalization feature which mean loud guildies don't make your ears bleed and whisper quiet guildies don't go ignored/unheard.

- Overlay feature, this puts an overlay on your wow screen when someone is talking in Mumble. Not exactly sure how this is yet but sounds intriguing.

- What this may mean to you: I know it can be a pain sometimes to introduce new software your own computer systems but I think this is at the very least worth having a look/see or maybe hear/heard option. I mean who doesn't want the ability to give and receive raid instructions where 1 or 2 seconds may mean the difference of wiping the raid or downing a boss for mah epix loots! Plus the added benefits of saving a few Benjamin's for happy meals and getting absolutely lost in how much sexier my voice sounds.

- Let us know! So... please feel free to let me/us know your thoughts, concerns, experiences and suggestions regarding the possibility of switching to a Mumble voice client for our raiding/guild needs.
